National physical therapy leader expands to Lowcountry in new partnership with Roper St. Francis

Lowcountry residents seeking outpatient physical therapy will have more options for those services this year as Roper St. Francis expands its offerings through a collaboration with ATI Physical Therapy. Roper St. Francis is the Lowcountry’s largest healthcare provider for adults, and ATI is the country’s industry leader in physical therapy.

The new company, Roper St. Francis Physical Therapy powered by ATI, has acquired Rehabilitation Centers of Charleston, an eight-clinic outpatient orthopedic and sports physical therapy practice. Its locations are across the Lowcountry, including Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, West Ashley, Johns Island, North Charleston, Summerville and Moncks Corner.

Roper St. Francis Physical Therapy powered by ATI expects to open seven additional locations locally during the next few months.

“Both Roper St. Francis and ATI are leaders in our respective fields, and this partnership will leverage our strengths for the benefit of Lowcountry residents,” said Doug Bowling, vice president and chief strategy officer for Roper St. Francis. “Roper St. Francis Physical Therapy powered by ATI looks forward to giving our community more convenient and easier access with more outpatient physical therapy locations.”

Roper St. Francis will continue to offer inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services at its hospital facilities, including Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, Roper Hospital and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital.

In addition to those locations, Roper St. Francis Physical Therapy powered by ATI will be the preferred partner of Roper St. Francis physicians who are referring patients to physical therapy. ATI is the nation’s largest physical therapy practice under one brand and the largest employer of athletic trainers in the country, serving over 200 professional, collegiate, high school and club teams.

Rehabilitation Centers of Charleston has served the community for more than 25 years, and Mark Rutledge, its majority owner, has been at the helm for the past 19 years. He plans to continue with Roper St. Francis powered by ATI as senior regional director.

“Our team always has strived to provide the best orthopedic rehabilitation for the people of the Lowcountry,” he said. “Combining the capabilities of ATI along with Roper St. Francis healthcare system, we will be able to provide more advanced orthopedic care for even better outcomes for our patients while maintaining cost-effectiveness."

ATI has developed a comprehensive, fully integrated program to help Roper St. Francis patients’ outcomes for conditions requiring physical therapy. ATI is excited to partner with Roper St. Francis to improve Lowcountry patients’ lives, said Dylan Bates, chief executive officer for ATI.

“This is an example of how ATI will forge partnerships with hospitals and healthcare systems to be on the leading edge of coordinated care for patients, which will result in better patient outcomes and more efficient care,” Bates said. “Across the patient lifecycle, Roper St. Francis shares our commitment to patient well-being and providing improved access to consistent, high quality care. We look forward to great things as we enter this partnership, and expand our presence in the market.”

About Roper St. Francis

Roper St. Francis is Charleston’s only private, not-for-profit hospital system with a specific focus on community outreach. The healthcare system has three hospitals strategically located across the region: Roper Hospital on the Charleston peninsula, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital in Mount Pleasant. The system intends to build a fourth flagship hospital in the Carnes Crossroads section of Berkeley County.
